Timing Tweets

A few months ago, I wrote about the varied advice I was finding about the right time to post on social media. Advice is one thing, numbers are another. I’m a big fan of researching to find my own answers and seeing if they match ‘trusted’ advice.

Since August, I took a look at all of my tweets posted using BufferApp that had at least 10 clicks or more. What I found was interesting. Considering only those sixty qualifying tweets, they generated 3,081 clicks, 19 retweets and 18 mentions, which averaged 51.35 clicks per tweet.

BufferApp by default recommends sending tweets at four different times through the day on weekdays. While I was using all four recommended times until now, I am planning to adjust this model moving forward. Why? I found the majority of clicks were generated by only three of the posting times.

I did not see a correlation between tweets that generated engagement like retweets and mentions with those that generated clicks. It also didn’t matter if the tweets used a hashtag. In fact, tweets with hashtags generated only 21% of the total clicks.

One other trend I will continue to watch is how frequency of posts affects engagement. Looking at October and November for example, you might think that October was more “successful.” While there were more clicks, I was also posting more frequently. In November, I had less tweets but also a higher average of clicks per tweet. My assumption is that when you’re creating less noise and focusing on content your audience will find relevant, they’re more likely to click. The old supply-and-demand game.

As far as the rest of my findings, I put together this infographic to summarize.

If visuals aren’t your thing, my results could simply be put like this:

For my audience, a perfect tweet to drive traffic would be: “Agree! Great infographic in Mashable blog w/ excellent tips on top productivity. bit.ly/55555 #fortwayne.” posted on a Thursday at 11:11 a.m.

Best Times to Send Email, Tweet, and more

Just one more infographic with the latest data on the best time to let everyone know your great idea…

Email Marketing – Best Times to Send Email for Opens and Click-Throughs [Infographic] : MarketingProfs Article.

You can read it but I’ll summarize it quickly. It’s the same set of times that BufferApp, Hootsuite and any other app says are the best times. No kidding.

When I first started using BufferApp, my click rates were much higher than before when I was posting them randomly. Having said that, I’ve seen a decline in clicks in recent weeks. I’ve reviewed and content isn’t much different. My phrasing, tone and keywords are all the same. So what gives?

My guess is that I’m not the only one using BufferApp or the Hootsuite scheduler. That likely means my posts are hitting at the same time as everyone else’s, which means the information is coming out of a fire hose. I don’t know about you, but I’m likely to step away from the fire hose rather than continue to stand underneath it.

I think the trend in clicks highlights this behavior change by the audience. Will the tools refresh their algorithms to capture where (in time) the audience has moved to? Will the audience come back to their normal habits after a brief period? Will you change your strategy?

I’m considering my own answers to these questions. Stay tuned….

Infographic: How I Spent Thursday

Yesterday felt busy. I wondered how it really was though. Was I as busy as I felt? Did I accomplish as much as I desired? Does social media take too much of my time?

So, I did some searching for helpful infographic generators. I’m already a fan of Wordle and then found this FastCompany article linking to IBM’s project Many Eyes. I plugged in my data set (of my activities from yesterday) and I was able to choose from a variety of graphs. I was pleased with the Bubble Graph.

The number of hugs and kisses I gave my kids may have been over-estimated. But, when I thought about the number of emails I sent compared to the number of kisses I may or may not have gave, I realized that I’d much rather strive to increase the number of hugs than the number of emails I can get out. After all, my family is what it is all about.

Super Bowl Ad Content Comparison: 2010 vs 2011

No. I’m not talking about the best and worst ads.

Watching tonight’s game ads, I was struck by the initial number of car spots. The first Budweiser commercial I saw, I realized…this is the first Budweiser commercial I’ve seen. In years past it would’ve been the third or fourth. (Note, I wasn’t complaining about the lack of beer advertising.) It made me wonder about who was advertising and what that meant for our economy.

I wasn’t taking notes in the commercials but used these sources to pull the list of 2010 and 2011 ads. Obviously, this is not scientific but counting the number of commercials in the categories I created, the following results were generated:

Super Bowl Ad Content Comparison: 2010 vs 2011

So, what does all this mean? Anything?

If I was looking for economic clues, I think it would be encouraging. Making some obvious generalizations: a lot of beer advertising tells me our country is interested in distracting ourselves from the current state of affairs; a high number of vehicle and related advertising along with the high number of movie trailers lets me know that marketers believe we’re interested in spending money and that we may have some to do so.

Again, this is not scientific but it does give me hope. Of course this can lead to a chicken and egg conversation…is the economy better so those ‘want-based’ brands have more money to spend on advertising? do ‘want-based’ brands need us to buy and think that by increasing their presence, we’ll do so (a little reverse-psychology)?

Whatever it is, it made for a good Super Bowl – on and off the field. At least in my opinion. What about yours?

Who doesn’t love good design?

If you’re anything like me and have a love of research and good design, you probably also share my love for infographics.  Continuing the theme of end-of-year lists, here are a few summary infographics from 2010.

  • A Year of Twitter: the good, the bad, the ugly from TweetSmarter
  • How Twitter Compares to Facebook from TweetSmarter
  • Apple’s App Store Visualized from FastCompany
  • Business Use of Social Media from TweetSmarter
  • 2010 State of Social Media Marketing from TweetSmarter
  • Just What Does Your State Do Best from FastCompany
  • 19 of the best Infographics from 2010 from Mashable
  • Roundup: The Gift of Giving from FastCompany
  • How Much Commuting Costs in 90 Cities from Lifehacker

I took the liberty of creating my own infographic of sorts. (Remember: I am not a graphic designer so don’t expect anything as pretty as the ones above.)  This illustration represents my top 23 tweets of 2010 (from March 1 (when I installed Hootsuite and began to utilize its URL tracking) to December 28.)  These tweets range in total clicks from 20-50 and are indicated below based on number of clicks, the time the tweets were sent and on what day.  Using this, I know that if I want to send something out to my followers to generate traffic, I should aim for Tuesdays between 1 and 3 PM.

Interested to know what tweets generated the most traffic? I pulled my top 23 tweets into Wordle and generated the following word cloud (using only 150 words).  Looks like my sticky content is around the #fortwayne hashtag, RT (retweets), and logos.
