I’m working on a few posts for you related to our Winter meal planning. They’ll be worth waiting for including shopping lists and costs. Well, I hope they’re worth waiting for. :)
In the meantime, I wanted to talk about pantry lists. You know the things…the items you always have to keep stocked whether it’s household items or those favorite food items. In addition to our meal planning, we keep the following items stocked in our ‘pantry':
- Boxes of cereal – these tend to be for the kids but I’ve been known to enjoy a bowl of cereal for dinner every now and then.
- Oatmeal – it’s the Winter version of cereal for us
- Mac N’ Cheese
- Peanut Butter
- Apples – who doesn’t love a good Honeycrisp?!
- Oranges – in the winter, we can’t get enough Cuties!
- Lettuce – for salads
- Grape Juice – it’s the juice of preference for our Team
- 1% Milk
- Cheese – either colby jack/monterrry squares or string cheese
- Ezekiel 4:19 bread
- Hot Dogs
- Frozen Pizza – inevitably, I’m too tired to cook one night and this saves us
- Paper Towels
- Toilet Paper
- Diapers – we still have one in diapers but hopefully we’ll be potty-training soon
- Laundry Detergent

So why a “pantry list”? It really helps budgeting! We do a monthly budget that doesn’t just include bills and any ‘extras’ for the month, but it includes all our food spending. Inevitably, over the month, we’ll buy these items at least once. The perishables may be purchased weekly or bi-weekly. As you start to meal plan, you should consider the total of these items as you prepare your grocery budget. Don’t just think about your menu items, but capture the cost of the items you routinely stock.
